Chronic pain affects 20 per cent of Canadians. The assessment and the management of chronic pain is now taught well in medical school. As well, there are ongoing controversies regarding chronic pain management, especially with opioids. This workshop will empower participants with the knowledge needed to assess patients with chronic pain, address risks for addiction, and manage chronic pain patients safely.
Topics will include pain assessment, review of addiction risks, non-pharmacological management of pain, and pharmacological management of pain. This session will include both didactic and interactive components. Care is taken to engage the audience in a lively discussion regarding the management of this often challenging patient population.
Perform a complete assessment of a patient with chronic pain.
Assess patient with chronic pain for addition risk.
Prescribe appropriate therapy for a patient with chronic pain.
Robert Hauptman BMSc, MD, MCFP Dr. Hauptman is the Medical Director of the Med Management Program at the HealthPointe Pain Centre in Edmonton. He works at HealthPointe as a Pain Consultant. Dr. Hauptman is the past president of the Pain Society of Alberta and was one of the society’s founding members. Dr. Hauptman is also one of the founding members of the AMA Section of Chronic Pain. He is currently President Elect for the section. Dr. Hauptman is a nationally recognized medical educator who has given over 1000 presentations and developed over 50 Mainpro accredited programs. Dr. Hauptman is also an Assistant Clinical Professor with the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta.
